Gilgit

Gilgit is district and capital city of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. Sargin is the ancient name of Gilgit. Gilgit is also known as Geelt, Gilt. It is a very important city on Silk Route, Road between Pakistan and China. British Government formed Gilgit Agency in 1877. In the past, Gilgit was known as Northern Areas of Pakistan.
In August 2009, the Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order 2009, was passed by the Government of Pakistan. It granted self-rule to the people of the former Northern Areas (now Gilgit-Baltistan). An elected legislative assembly is also formed in Gilgit Baltistan.
Shina is the language of the majority of the people however Urdu and English are also spoken in urban areas.

Tourism Spots in Gilgit:
Tourists from around the world came in Gilgit and then go to Himalya and Karakoram mountain ranges. Jeeps are the best vehicles to travel in Gilgit.
There are many valleys near Gilgit having attractions for tourists. Some of the main tourism attractions are; Hunza Valley, Naltar Valley, Ferry Meadows, Deosai National Park, Rama Lake.
Road transport and flights to Gilgit are also available.

Hotels and Restaurants in Gilgit:
There are many hotels and restaurants for local and foreign tourists.

Natural Resources of Gilgit:
Many precious stones, metals and minerals (Ruby, Topaz, Gold, Zircon, Lead, Moonstone, Himalayan Quartz, Emerald, Marble, Granite, Antimony, Graphite, Coal, Copper and China Clay etc) found in Gilgit.

Karakoram International University:
Karakoram International University is the biggest educational institution of Gilgit.
